Since the first local experiments with lasers in 1966, laser research has become the trademark of Szeged physics. More than 40 years in the forefront of laser physics, especially in the area of high-energy and ultrashort-pulse lasers, qualify Szeged for having been chosen as the site of a massive EU investment called Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI). Of the four prospective pillars, the Szeged facility ELI-ALPS (Attosecond Light Pulse Source) will be dedicated to ultra-high energies and ultra-short pulses, and apart from breaking new ground in the study of very fast atomic and molecular processes, it is also expected to bring about improvements in medicine and life sciences. Potential applications include phase-contrast X-ray imaging, small-angle X-ray scattering, mid-infrared spectroscopy of biomolecules, laser dentistry, laser angioplasty, endoscopic submucosal dissection and laser lithotripsy.

To discuss and disseminate the implications of these developments, the University of Szeged organised a summer school entitled Lasers in Medicine and Life Sciences (LAMELIS) in 2014. We feel that the feedback we have received on the quality of the talks and the atmosphere of the first event is not only an encouragement but also an obligation to establish a tradition, so we announce a LAMELIS again this year. The LAMELIS 2015 summer school will be held between 13th and 18th July.
